If the name of the website isn't a dead giveaway, I have a bit of an obsession with EuroCult/Horror films.   I've spent the better part of 3 decades now watching and obsessing over these European cinematic oddities, and still new films surface that I haven't seen. That is the case with the new Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray release of a Spanish horror film called Secta Siniestra (Bloody Sect).

Bloody Sect is the one and only film by director Ignacio F. Iquino. The film stars Carlos Martos as Frederick, a sleazy guy who as the film opens is having sex with his mistress Helen (Emma Quer).  The scenario takes a violent turn when Frederick's unstable wife Elizabeth emerges, and blinds Frederick with a fire poker. The film then picks up with Elizabeth in jail for the crime, and Frederick being blind.

The story than picks up a while after, Frederick is now married to Helen and they are trying, and failing to, conceive a child. They go to a specialist who offers to artificially inseminate her, unfortunately, for the couple the doctor is a member of a cult trying to bring upon the return of the Anti-Christ, and Helen has been chosen as the vessel for it.

Bloody Sect is insane. I'll admit I watched it at 3 am, and that likely contributed to the mania behind this film. However, even had I watched it in the middle of the day, this is a film that starts in a wild way, and keeps going.   There is a decent amount of splatter, nudity, and other strangeness that occur in this one. The performances from the cast are pretty solid for the material, but Diana Conca who plays Elizabeth really goes amazingly over the top in every scene she is in.  The film is briskly paced going from one crazed moment to the next, and this film is totally easy to recommend for Eurohorror fans.

The Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome, and I probably don't need to tell you this, at this point, is simply gorgeous. Vinegar Syndrome present Bloody Sect in a splendid 1:85:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer preserving the OAR of the film.    The detail here is excellent, everything looks quite natural, colors are well reproduced, and I could not find any real issues.   Audio is handled by a DTS-HD Mono Track in English.   Everyting sounds quite solid, clean, crisp, and no discernible issues. Extras include a fascinating and deep commentary by Kat Ellinger, who goes into details about Bloody Sect, but also about Spanish cinema in general.   There is also a still gallery, and reversible artwork.  Bloody Sect is amazing, and insane and all fans of Spanish horror and sleaze cinema should check out this newly exposed oddity. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
