The Series (3.5/5)

Dragon Ball Super part 6 picks up power mad God Zamasu Attacking the future. Goku and Company must stop him at any means possible. This set of episodes quickly rushes through the story to settle down into more comic themed side quests.

The Zamasu story arch is finished in a fast and off handed way. Almost as if the showrunners realized they had written their selves into a hole. New concepts are introduced and quickly dropped within the same episode. It’s not hard to see why fans of the series would feel cheated with the fast turn around and “so what” attitude.

The new comic filler episodes and side quests fit into Akira Toriyama’s blend of gag humor and melodrama. This set of episodes mostly bounces around wild and free of overall story concerns. The two highlights of the set are the Dr. Slump Crossover episode and the Great Saiyaman movie side story. It’s a real shame Dr. Slump isn’t better known here in the US, because this zany and Looney Tunes inspired brand of humor is endlessly refreshing and found fit right at home with the likes of One Punch Man. This is where the series finds its best laugh out loud moments. The movie set episodes borrow some story elements from the troubled series, Dragon Ball GT, but here the lubricous moments are made in more natural jokey tone.

In terms of animation, this set of episodes is a mess. Some episodes are mismatched with color and rushed repeating effects. Some characters lose all their expression in their face and look rough around the ears. The last three episodes mark a huge improvement with a new opening credits sequence that foreshadows upcoming story arches. So, there is hope the series will course correct and have more balanced production values.

Audio/Video (4/5)

The 5.1 Japanese DTS-HD MA audio is clear of hiss and pops. Some of the effects are mixed too loud, and the musical score is harsh in a few spots. The 5.1 English DTS-HD MA audio is sharper with a softer music mix. English subtitles are included.

The 1080p HD transfer is clear and vivid thanks to the new color schemes. Some spots are washed out on contrast. Otherwise a handsome looking transfer.

Extras (3/5)

Disc 2 comes with a selection of interviews from Anime Expo 2018 with Sonny Strait, Matthew Mercer, and Kyle Hebert, Textless Opening and closing songs, and a trailer gallery.

Overall (4/5)

Dragon Ball Super Part 6 is an uneven set of episodes with a heavy push for comedy. Fans expecting a more action packed will be disappointed, but if your open to Toriyama’s wider universe the comedy is a welcomed change of pace. Recommended.
