Abel Ferrera in many ways could be considered one of the best, and most interesting of American directors of the last 40 years. He came into the cinematic landscape with the one-two punch of the horror and revenge films The Driller Killer and Ms. 45. However, like many people working on the sleazier side of filmmaking in 1970's New York , Ferrera actually got his start with an independently produced porno film, that co-starred himself, and his then girlfriend called Nine Lives of a Wet Pussy, which has been restored by Vinegar Syndrome and released to Blu-ray this month.

Nine Lives of a Wet Pussy follows Pauline, played by Pauline LaMonde.  Pauline is a wealthy heiress that lives for sex, and also reporting on her sexual conquest to her tarot-card-reading friend named Gypsy. That is about as much structure as the film gets, as we move from one weird sexual encounter (including a bizarre incest based fantasy) to the next one.

The film is not exactly a quality porno film, and for the most part is rather dull. Going in, I expected more from someone who had a career such as Ferrara, but the one thing that stood out, where the more artistic visuals that he tried to present here. During the sex scenes, and during the between sex moments. It's just minor flashes of visual inspiration, but one would guess he was limited by budget and market in what he could acheive. Still the film is definitely worth seeing for fans of Ferrera who want a glimpse at his start.

Vinegar Syndrome presents Nine Lives of a Wet Pussy is presented by Vinegar Syndrome in a very solid 1:85:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer. The film does not look perfect, but that is to be expected here. Still Vinegar Syndrome give the film a well-textured, organic looking transfer that really brings out the visuals in a way they have likely never been seen before. Audio is handled by a DTS-HD master audio track in English. This sounds quite solid, and without any noticeable issues. Extras include a trailer for the film, and a highly informative commentary track by film historian Samm Deighan. Vinegar Syndrome's Nine Lives of a Wet Pussy comes RECOMMENDED.
