The Series (4/5)

It honestly has been hard for me to even come to terms with the fact that Evil Dead has come to TV. I basically ignored the remake as even though it was decent enough, it wasn't worth a single rewatch in my world (I was thus surprised there is a subsection of horror viewers leading the charge for a series spun off of that one). Now the show is gone, and we now have 30 half hour episodes of Evil Dead after over 2 decades of begging Sam Raimi and company for just a single additional movie! The great thing is that this show works wonders, and for a TV show the violence is INSANE.

In Season 1 Ash had to come to terms with the fact that he had let loose the Deadites after 30 years. He had paired up with a few co-workers and they had dubbed themselves "Ghost Beaters" as they worked across the country trying to defect the threat. Rather, then win, they negotiated a truce with Ruby (Lucy Lawless), but this was short-lived. The Deadites came back, and Ash and the Ghost Beaters had to take them on in Ash's home town, all the while Ash had to deal with his estranged Father. The third series sees Ash still in his Michigan hometown, taking over and finding he has a daughter that he never knew about. All the while the Deadites are returning again, this time due to a reading of the Necronomicon by the host of an Antiques' Roadshow-esque TV show.

This series was another amazing run, and while Season 2 was hit/miss for me Season 3 was one huge psychotronic hit (and yes I am applying that term to a modern TV show). It's weird, violent, and totally over the top. I have only watched these episodes on Blu-ray, but as I sat there the season unveiling itself to me, I was shocked at how far this show went, and saddened that this was it. I was also deeply frustrated that something this good can get 3 seasons while something as abysmal as the Walking Dead continues to shuffle on.

Audio/Video (4/5)

Ash Vs. Evil Dead comes to Blu-ray in a very solid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer that preserves the show's OAR. Everything here looks quite solid and without much in the way of issue, color reproduction and detail are excellent, blacks are solid.

Audio is handled by English TRUE HD 7.1 tracks with sound excellent with great separation of sound and no discernible issues.

Extras (3.5/5)

Extras include episode commentaries with most of the creative staff, and an Inside Ash Vs. Evil Dead featurette.

Overall

Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 3 may have been the craziest and most over the top season of this sadly short lived show. The Blu-ray looks and sounds excellent with a decent extras slate RECOMMENDED.
