The Film (4/5)

Black Panther was the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is now the latest in the interconnected series of comic book superhero films to make its way to Blu-ray/UHD/DVD. It is becoming cliché to say that each film seems to be better than each subsequent one, and fortunately, I am beginning to feel that is the case less and less with these (I still haven't seen Infinity War, don't judge me). However, even if each film is not objectively better Marvel still manages to wow its audience with films that introduce new and interesting characters, that feel like an organic part of the same universe while managing to feel tonally different (at times). Black Panther is one of those films, that brings a character introduced in 2017's Captain America: Civil War, and gives him a film that is distinctly his own.

Black Panther follows the story of T'Challa, his father the former king of Wakanda has just died and he is to take over the crown.  In order to fully takeover the crown, he has to temporarily lose his "Black Panther" powers and undertake a tribal challenge, which he initially does successfully. Until a long lost cousin reappears, Erik,  also known as Killmonger, who challenges him, and successfully defeats him taking away his crown and bringing him near death. Now, T'Challa has to regain his strength, and the power of the Black Panther to take down Killmonger, and stop Wakanda's secrets from escaping into the world at large.

Black Panther starts out slow, but in doing so takes the time to build out its story, characters, and situations. Because T'Challa was setup successfully in Civil War, we as viewers already had some decent background on him, and were able to get more information on background characters, their histories, and the world of Wakanda as a whole.   When Black Panther really starts getting going about half an hour into the film, the film really never lets up, and I do not mean this from an action sense. The film has a very solid mix of strong narrative, performances, and fantastic action that really helps power it. The direction from Ryan Coogler is brilliant, helping to bring the world of Wakanda to startling life.

Audio/Video (5/5)

Disney/Marvel presents Black Panther in an excellent 2:39:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer preserving the OAR of the film.  Colors here look excellent, detail is great, flesh tones are accurate, and I could find no issues.

Audio is handled by a DTS-HD 7.1 track that again has no issues and comes through crisp and clear.

Extras (3.5/5)

The Blu-ray contains a nice slew of extras mostly featurettes, Q&A's, interviews, gag reels, deleted scenes, and more.

Overall

Black Panther is another fantastic entry in the MCU loaded up with excellent action, and great performances all around. The Blu-ray from Disney/Marvel looks and sounds marvelous, and has a nice slate of extras. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
