The Series (4.5/5)

I try to do as little research as possible on a title I haven't heard of PRIOR to watching it, before I inevitably review it. That way I go into a series or film as a clean experience without the baggage of other people's opinions or knowledge of prior work. Over the last few years this has caused many unique experiences for myself as a viewer and a reviewer, and I am happy to say that the new Studio 3hz series (2016 title actually) Flip Flappers is one of those.

Flip Flappers follows Cocona, a middle school girl whose life hasn't been going the way she has wanted it to, and has been trying to figure a way forward.  One thing she had never considered was a magical life, in a magical world, but sometimes fate intervenes and that is what happens here, when a being called  Papika comes into her world and grants her access to the world of Pure Illusion. It also causes her to join the Flip Flap organization, who tasks her with a mission to find mysterious shards.

Flip Flappers is a really bizarre and fun anime. It has an adventurous tone due to the whole quest for the shard, but it's also balanced with a middle school slice-of-life vibe. Because of the nature of the world of "Pure Illusion". The landscapes of the dimension change frequently and, allows for a lot of interesting  animation. This allows for the series to never really be boring, and really ahead of the audience. There are some straight forward elements, that frequent viewers of similar material might find predictable, but overall Flip Flappers is a fun, interesting experience.

Audio/Video (4/5)

Flip Flappers comes to Blu-ray in a solid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded Blu-ray that looks quite nice. The varying color schemes are well represented and pop from the screen. Detail is solid, and I could find nary an issue. Audio is handled by DTS-HD MA 2.0 tracks in English and Japanese. Both are quite clear, and without issue.

Extras (1/5)

Just the usual cleaning opening and closing, with some trailers thrown in for good measure.

Overall

Flip Flappers is a bizarre, but fun slice of life, meets adventure anime. The Blu-ray from Sentai looks quite excellent, but is limited in extras. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
