The Series (2.5/5)

Grimoire of Zero follows Mercenary a warrior who hates witches, who one day finds himself rescued by a quite powerful witch by the name of Zero. He now finds himself in her debt, and follows her on a quest to find her stolen magical text the titular "Grimoire of Zero". Also, along on this mission is Albus, who is a sorcerer who belongs to the group the "Sorcerers of Zero" (no relations to the Zero in this party), who are sworn to defend a man only known as "Him".  As the quest goes on we find that Zero is looking for a person named 13, who is also running around in the background doing quite nefarious things.  To say anymore would spoil elements of the story.

Grimoire of Zero is sort of a cliche magic-users anime. That's not to say one can't find enjoyment out of it, it's just that if you've seen one magical anime recently, you sort of know where a lot of this is going, or what a lot of this is inspired by. The first half of the anime is setting up the characters from the trio of heroes, to the villains who run around in the background. The back 6 episodes get a little bit more action heavy as war begins to break out and the twist based on preconceived character moments begin to occur.

The art style used here is pretty much the house art style used for the average magical anime, nothing too special, but again it works. The writing is solid, but there isn't a twist that you won't see coming a mile away. The action sequences in the latter half are at the very least decent I'm not sure if the pay off on those are worth watching the whole thing though.

Audio/Video (3.5/5)

Grimoire of Zero comes to Blu from Section 23 in a solid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer.  Colors are nicely reproduced, line detail is fine, blacks levels are solid, and I could find not much in the way of issues here.

Audio is handled by DTS-HD MA tracks in English and Japanese. I could find no issues with any of them.

Extras (1/5)

Clean opening and closings, Japanese promos, Sentai trailers.

Overall

A solid, but largely unremarkable magical anime Grimoire or Zero proves to be a decent little time waster. The Blu-ray looks and sounds solid and has limited extras. RENT IT.
