The Series (1.5/5)

Kimihito is your normal young man. He lives a simple life and enjoys his peace. But this all changes when he suddenly becomes a host family for a half snake girl. As he adjusts to her attitude, it becomes clear that she and a few other monster girls are in love with him. And comedy ensues. Or at least I wish it would.

MONSTER MUSUME is based on the manga of the same name from Okayado. It’s a series that fits in the Harem genre, an area of the anime and manga world that I’ve tried to enjoy, but it just isn’t working for me. The idea of a harem is to have a male fantasy of a nerdy guy who finds himself being the center of affections for several beautiful girls. The idea can be sweet in a romantic comedy way, but sadly most series take the idea too far and start to push it to icky areas.

And sadly, this is where MONSTER chooses to go. On an animation level the character designs are too outlandish. The main girl is a lamiai, half snake woman, and her design made me feel ill in places. Her tail being comically over long. But while that could work for Godzilla in SHIN GODZILLA, here it coupled with her over sexual moans, makes everything uncomfortable. The various other monster women seem thrown together and cheap looking.

As for the rest of the series, the episodes drag with unfunny situations. The story just kind of sits there and doesn’t offer me anything to care or root for. The writing is also painfully basic. The jokes at best are childish. If you’re a fan of series that dripping with fan service, then this is for you. But I felt like I needed a shower afterwards.

Audio/Video (3/5)

The series comes with two audio tracks. First up is the Japanese DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio. The sound mix is passable, but there are a few sections where the sound spikes up. The score and effects sound fine, with no hiss or pops. The second track is the English DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio, which is fine. The dub has no real issues, just overall softer then the Japanese. English subtitles are included.

On the video side, we get a 1080p HD transfer, which is soft in a few spots. There’s some minor motion blur and the colors look dull in a few spots. The black levels are smooth and well defined.

Extras (3/5)

We get the clean opening and closing animations, Music Videos, Japanese tv spots, and a trailer gallery.

Overall (1/5)

If this is your cup of tea, then I’m sure you’ll pick it up. But for me, this is a one time watch.
