The Series (3/5)

To Love Ru involves a young man named Rito Yuki, who one day finds an alien named LaLa in his bathtub. He is a clumsy oaf, and ends up grabbing her boob. On her planet Devilluke this is akin to a marriage proposal, and he isn't about to turn her down, especially as she begins to worship the ground he walks on. The Blu-ray set involves 4 series of to Love Ru, the first 2 are more episodic with less of a narrative through line. The last 2 series subtitled "Darkness" begin to include more a plot with their ecchi/harem antics.

The series early episodes, are more of a blend of comedy and romance involving the love triangle between Rito, LaLa (his alien fiancee), and his girlfriend involved in a love triangle/comedic romance. The latter 2 series LaLa and Rito fall increasingly into the background, and we get more of a focus on Momo, the younger sister of LaLa, and her "harem plan", which brings ever increasingly cute girls to Rito's house.

The first 2 series I struggled to get through, as they felt too episodic and silly. The latter half of the series (The Darkness ones), felt more plotted, and though the fan service was never far behind, as it should be expected with this series, the world begins to open up, and we get a more interesting story.

The Complete Collection put out this month by Sentai Filmworks contains all 4 seasons. The first series was created in 2008, while the latter 3 were created much later. This gives an overall different look between the original series animation, and the brighter more detailed and pronounced animation that would be part of the latter series.

Audio/Video (3/5)

The first series is a 1080i AVC encoded transfer, while the others are 1080p. The image quality for the earlier one is therefore a tad lesser, than what would come later. Colors are stable through out an detail is fine, but there will be significant quality shift between the two eras.

Audio chores are handled by a DTS-HD MA 2.0 track in Japanese with subs throughout the 4 series. Everything comes through clear and concise with no issues.

Extras (1/5)

Sentai presents the show with just a clean opening and closing animation.

Overall

Not entirely my cup of tea, but To Love Ru is largely an enjoyable, and fun series. It really does pick up in the latter 2 series, so if you're unsure you might want to skip ahead. The Blu-ray looks and sounds quite decent,  but I'd give this one a RENTAL if possible.
