The Film (3.5/5)

Severin Films is one of the best friends Jess Franco fans could ever have. Ever since their inception, they have it made it seemingly their cause to put out the director's work, both his greater known (Vampyros Lesbos, She Killed in Ecstasy), and his marginal obscurities (Macumba Sexual, Mansion of the Living Dead) on DVD and Blu-ray.  They also seemingly have a bottomless pit of interviews recorded with the now late director seemingly ready to go on any of their releases, which makes them even more special having Franco being able to speak out on his work, even though he is no longer able to participate. On August 29th Severin released another Franco obscurity Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties on to Blu-ray.

This film stars Franco's longtime partner and muse Lina Romay and Lynn Monteil as a pair of imprisoned strippers who are given the opportunity to regain their freedom if they act as spies for the U.S. Government on the Canary islands. The pair must go undercover at a strip club, and try to find the secrets of a sex trafficking ring. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Franco film without the pair getting into some erotic escapades of their own.

Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties, doesn't actually feature any flowered panties, but it does feature spying, hippies in the desert, wall to wall sex, and so much weirdness that it is unmistakably a Franco picture. Romay and Monteil provide solid turns in their roles, and have an interesting chemistry. The film has so much unique and hysterical weirdness during its runtime, that the 94 minute runtime goes by in a flash.

Audio/Video (3.5/5)

Severin presents Two Female Spies With Flowered Panties in a very solid 1:33:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer. This is one of Franco's EuroCine films, and as such would usually come from a potentially lesser source, but this film looks quite good, detail is solid, colors are stable and well reproduced, and grain is natural and organic looking.  There is some softness, and damage from the source, but it is not in abundance, and never intrusive.

Audio is handled with LPCM mono English and French tracks, both are quite serviceable and convey the dialogue and score quite clearly.

Extras (4/5)

The first 3000 copies include an SD copy of the Spanish version of the film on an extra DVD. Aside from that we also get an interview with Franco, another interview by Donald Farmer with composer Daniel White, the most substantial extra is an analysis of the film by the always reliable Stephen Thrower.  There are also outtakes and a trailer.

Overall

An interesting, off-the-wall rarity from director Jess Franco, Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties comes to Blu-ray well restored and packed with extras from Severin Films. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
