The Series (4/5)

Ushio and Tora follows a middle school student Ushio whose Father owns a temple which is rumored to house demons. Ushio being a cynical young man does not believe him, until one day he finds the 500 years captured demon "Tora" in the basement, impaled and stuck to the wall by a spear, known as the beast spear. Tora tries to negotiate for his freedom, but Ushio refuses. That is until a Yokai attack makes it necessary for Ushio to acquire Tora's help. This makes Ushio responsible for Tora, and the two must battle their way through the supernatural.

Ushio and Tora modernizes the OVA and manga series from the 90's. The designs are kept intact, and just modernized using modern animation techniques. With that in mind the show itself looks pretty damn good. The show starts out as a sort of odd couple affair, with Ushio and Tora struggling to interact on the same level, and some comedy coming from that. The show does get darker as things get less episodic and more plot oriented. That being said said the show is very much battle-centric, and it's hard to watch more than 2-3 episodes in a sitting. Ushio and Tora is a fun and engaging show, but it does feel a bit monotonous in the long run, but exciting and fun when broken up into short viewings.

Audio/Video (4/5)

Sentai presents the show in its original 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer. Everything looks quite solid here, since the show blend some older styles with modern technique things are bound to look a bit different but detail is solid, colors are strong, and blacks are deep.

We are given two audio options DTS-HD MA tracks in Japanese and English. I listened to both but primarily stuck with the native Japanese track, both came through crisp and clear for the most part with no issues.

Extras (1.5/5)

Clean opening, and closing, promo videos, and trailers.

Overall

Ushio and Tora is a fun and violent anime experience. The Blu-ray looks and sounds quite good, with limited extras. RECOMMENDED
