The Film (4/5)

Naughty Network is a vignette-style hardcore adult feature film from writer and director Howard Ziehm.  As far as this reviewer is concerned, Howard Ziehm was a very underrated director and writer whose work should have received more attention.  Howard Ziehm was incredibly creative and quite often didn't create the stereotypical adult film that was found at the time.  He consistently found new and innovative ways to make adult films that elevated them above much of his contemporaries.

Naughty Network stays true to Howard Ziehm's above average adult film releases.  Naughty Network is, at its core, a vignette film – a style that Howard Ziehm excelled at making.  However, unlike many of the vignette films that came out at the time, this isn't a collection of unrelated sex scenes that have a weak attempt to glue them together to try and make a coherent piece.  Upon watching Naughty Network, it is clear that each vignette was written specifically for this film.

The backbone that holds Naughty Network together is that Mr. Blackman (Harry Dreamz), the network president of WHAC – an X-rated television network – wants every program to be number one.  He entertains ideas from his many producers for programs that they feel have what it takes to be a number one hit.

The bulk of the film is each one of the producers' ideas for X-rated television shows that are shown when the producer explains the concept for the show.  This delivery vehicle gives Howard Ziehm the ability to introduce a lot of sex scenes that are connected with each skit in a variety of situations.

Howard Ziehm keeps the film flowing nicely and nicely intermingles the sex with comedy.  In several ways, Naughty Network feels like something that Ken Shapiro could have made had he ever gotten into hardcore films.  Naughty Network may not have the star power that some adult films have; however, Naughty Network shouldn't be missed.

Audio/Video (4.5/5)

Vinegar Syndrome has done a beautiful job with their DVD release of Naughty NetworkNaughty Network was shot on 35mm film, and Vinegar Syndrome has used a 2K scan of the camera negative for this release.  Naughty Network is presented in the anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 480p.  The image looks nice with fine grain, artifacts, and print damage.  The colors look beautiful and vivid.

Naughty Network is presented on the release with an English Dolby Digital 1.0 monaural audio track.  The dialog in the film is clear and easy to understand at all times.  There aren't any noticeable defects with the audio presentation at all.

Extras (1/5)

The only extra that Vinegar Syndrome has included on this release is the theatrical trailer for Naughty Network.

Overall

Naughty Network is a fun and weird comedic vignette-style feature adult film from writer and director Howard Ziehm.  Naughty Network spoofs television shows of the 1970s while providing the viewer with several well-done sex scenes.  Naughty Network doesn't have an A-list cast and is easy to overlook; however, it will greatly reward viewers who choose not to pass it over.  Vinegar Syndrome has done a beautiful job with their DVD release of Naughty Network with great video and audio quality.
