The Film (1/5)

Wild Orchid  is an erotic tale about an innocent well-mannered young lawyer, Emily (Carre Otis) who goes to Brazil to finalize the purchase of a hotel. During her stay she sees a couple having sex which upsets her, but soon, as she continues to get exposed to more sexual goings-on during the film, she herself finds her own animalistic sexuality. Along for the ride is James Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) who at first is on a date with one of the executives of the law firm buying the hotel, Claudia Dennis (Bisset). He then becomes interested in Emily and becomes her pet project. He spends time with Emily, sharing his philosophy about life. Eventually, they both engage in a steamy, sweaty graphic, sex scene done in slow motion for some odd reason and they live happily ever after. Because Otis and Rourke were a couple at the time, and there have been lots of rumors that the sex scene was real, as opposed to reel.

I don’t recall a movie where I was so incredible bored and uninterested; even with ample nudity and the healthy male that I am, this was just a, dare I say, flat film. This movie was really what I refer to as a ‘nothing’ film; the characters were bland and eroticism does not interest me in one bit. The human element in this movie was missing; outside of the nudity was emptiness, due to poor characterization and the hogwash dialog Mickey Rourke is forced to recite. The one positive thing I can say about this film was the beautiful scenery of Brazil.

 If only Wild Orchid was as good as the presentation Eureka has given it.  Eureka has done a masterful job with this movie’s image quality.  In 1080p, along with an MPEG-4 AVC encode and presented in its original aspect ratio of 1:85:1, this is visually stunning. Colors are vibrant, sharp, and clear, it’s just beautiful.  Grain is present, it’s never looked better. The audio, LCPM English 2.0 is also perfectly sound, with no issues with dialog or the musical / dance numbers.

Eureka provides us with a trailer, but the bigger story is that the release contains the unrated version, unlike the Olive Films blu ray release

Wild Orchid  will not be to everyone’s taste, and in fact many who do enjoy erotic films might not even enjoy this movie.  This is one movie that will become something I will soon forget that I ever watched. However, the presentation of the release by Eureka is of their usual A+ quality. In simple words, Wild Orchid is a lousy film, but with an excellent release.
