The Film (4/5)

Michael (Hugo Metsers) has just been released from prison after a 5 year sentence for sleeping with an underaged girl. Back in the market after 5 years Michael's libido is out of control. Fortunately, the married women in his apartment complex are willing to share a cup of sugar (and much more) with Michael as he navigates his way into this new world of kinky and open sexual relationships.

I'll preface this review that when Blue Movie came to my door I was expecting the over the top 1978 Alberto Cavallone film. What we have here is a 1971 German/Netherlands co-production, that helped break down the barriers of pornography in Western Europe. The film from the description and first appearances might seem like an early 70's skin flick, however, this Blue Movie has an occasional somber tone that greatly contrasts with other similar films of the time, and also allows it to have a say about societal expectations in regards to sexualityk and  other social issues of the period issues of the time and even now.

The film is shot in more cold and muted tones with cinematography by Jan de Bont(Speed). The film has solid performances from the entire cast specifically Hugo Mesters and Carry Tefsen. The film artfully blends sex with social commentary and a bleak atmosphere that makes this one in dire need of finding a new audience, and hopefully this Blu-ray will do just that.

Audio/Video (4/5)

Blue Movie is presented by Cult Epics in a very solid 1:37:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer. The Blu-ray looks a bit more raw and natural and thus has a filmlike quality to it that is quite endearing. At times the image looks flat, but overall colors, and detail are well represented here.

Audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 2.0 track in Dutch with optional English subtitles. The track is quite serviceable and all audio comes through crisp and clear.

Extras (3/5)

The Blu-ray comes with a light amount of extras that are definitely of interest to fans of the film. We get an archival interview with director Wim Verstappen, further we have a 2018 Q and A with producer Pim de la Parra. Also, an interview with the son of the film's star, a piece of the studio that restored the film, and a trailer.

Overall

Blue Movie is a film that blends a cold and bleak atmosphere with solid erotic content to create something interesting and quite easy to recommend. The Blu-ray from Cult Epics looks and sounds fantastic, and has a limited, but solid extras slate.
