The Series (4/5)
In a post-apocalytic Tokyo of the future (the best kind), citizens are now allowed to arm themselves with weaponry to defend against the uprising of criminal behavior in the city. Amongst them are 4 young women, who have become vigilantes to fight against the mutants and criminals of Tokyo.
I first came to watch Burst Angel after seeing the trailer on a DVD of another series in the early 2000's (I can't remember what). All that I can remember is that the trailer's exciting mix of gunplay, mecha action, and the leads, sucked me in and wouldn't let me go. At the time there wasn't a complete collection, and I've never believed in piracy, so I ended up buying the series piece-meal across 6 Funimation DVD releases. At first I found myself underwhelmed with the setup, but after about 5 episodes the series hit it's stride and became an action packed fun time. Watching Burst Angel today, I still maintain that same feeling.
The show has incredibly solid animation, with great world-building, and character designs. The action sequences have a tendency to go over the top, and are just super-exciting and fun to watch. The characters at first seem like caricatures, but over time get fleshed out and brought to solid life. The show does have slower parts that are kind of dull against the better more realized episodes, but the series as a whole makes up for it, and is easy to recommend.
Audio/Video (4/5)
The 1:78:1 1080p presentation from Funimation looks solid with excellent detail and (no pun intended) bursting colors. There is some minor softness, but this rarely detracts from the overall whole. Audio is handled with 2 5.1 HD one in Japanese the other in English. Both tracks sound quite excellent and bring the world of the series to startling life.
Extras (3.5/5)
Unlike the older collection , this series lacks the OVA's, but it does have commentaries, promo videos, trailers and much more.
Overall
Burst Angel is an excellent, action packed, post-apocalyptic cyberpunk anime series that still makes me happy years later. The Blu-ray looks sounds quite solid, and has a decent extras slate HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
