I have pretty much loved Severin Films since the beginning. When EuroCultAV first started some of our first DVD reviews were those from Severin including such titles as Malabimba - The Malicious Whore and The Sinful Dwarf. These titles are EuroCult and Eurosleaze classics, and as such completely up our alley. This month, well over 10 years since we did our first Severin reviews, we are treated to Byleth - The Demon of Incest proving Severin's dedication to Eurosleaze.
Byleth - The Demon of Incest is directed by Spaghetti Western veteran Leopoldo Savona, and starring Mark Damon. The film follows Lionello (Matt Damon, Black Sabbath), a Duke, who has spent his life erotically attracted to his sister Barbara . Barbara returns to the family castle after a year abroad, with a newlywed husband in tow. This sets off Lionello's jealousy, as he wanted to lay claim to Barbara. In the midst of this comes a series of murders involving a tri-clawed weapon, that many people, including the local priest consider the work of a demon Byleth.
Much praise goes to Severin Films for releasing this film, which feels like something along the lines of The Devil's Nightmare or Nude for Satan in its blend of Euro Gothic, with violence and sleaze. I've been a fan of the aforementioned films for a very long time, and it is always nice to find another sleazy gothic to add to my pile of favorites. The film isn't very bloody, but what's there is solid. It focuses more on the sex side of the sex/horror equation, and works nicely. I did note a few non-hardcore insert moments to ramp up the heat on this one.
Severin Films presents Byleth in a very solid 1080p AVC encoded transfer. There is a preface to the presentation to disregard some of the damage that could not be fixed from the best possible source. This isn't overly prevalent anyway, and is primarily in the first act. Aside from that colors are stable, detail is excellent, and there is a nice organic texture to the presentation. Audio is handled with English and Italian HD mono tracks, which sound fine and without noticeable issue. Oddly, there are no extras. Still Byleth - The Demon of Incest is an atmospheric and sleazy good time, and comes RECOMMENDED.
