Vers (Brie Larson) is a Kree warrior aiding the Starforce in their seemingly never-ending war against the shapeshfting Skrulls. Vers was found in the middle of combat a few years prior, but lacked any memory of her past, as such the Kree, and specifically her mentor Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) have helped to incorporate her into Kree culture, and train her to use her bourgeoning powers to develop her combat skills. In the middle of a recent battle, Vers is forced to crash land on Earth in the 1990's. She soon after hooks up with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), and begins to work with them to fight against the Skrulls, and put together her past.
Captain Marvel isn't the best of the recent Marvel slate, however, like last year's Ant-Man and the Wasp the film is an excellent palette cleanser after last year's Infinity War, and helps to introduce the character and her situation before her reemergence in Endgame. The film's 90's setting allows a more time specific sense of humor to be introduced in the film. Fortunately, Marvel doesn't rely too heavily on 90's in-jokes for the film, and manages to make an excellent blend of Earth based MCU and Cosmic MCU in one awesome go.
The film is loaded up with excellent action sequences, and fantastic visual effects that are on par with the work MCU has done in the past and would continue with Endgame. Larson makes a fantastic Captain Marvel, bringing the character to life in a way that shows conflict, and the ability to build off each new difficulty she finds herself in, until she is prepared to be the hero the galaxy needs.
Disney presents Captain Marvel in a solid 2:39:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer preserving the OAR of the film. The film is shot digitally and the crispness of the digital photograph is evident here. Colors pop, black levels are deep, and I can detect no real issues here. Audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 7.1 track in English. Everything here sounds excellent, and without any obvious issues. Extras include a series of short featurettes about the character and the making of the film, an intro which is sort of short BTS burst of information, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and a commentary by director Anna Boden. Captain Marvel continues the MCU in a fun, entertaining, and action-packed way and the Blu-ray comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
