The Film (3/5)

Mitch (Billy Crystal, Throw Momma From a Train)  is an advertising executive at a radio station who finds himself sad-sacking about his middle age as his 39th birthday looms.  At the same time his best friend Phil (Daniel Stern, C.H.U.D.) finds himself on the verge of divorce after he impregnates a grocery store clerk at the store he manages. Together with their friend Ed (Bruno Kirby) the trio go on a realistic cowboy cattle drive in New Mexico to try and get their heads together.

City Slickers 1 and 2 came on TV A LOT in the 90's as such a I saw these films way more than a healthy person should.  However, I'd not seen City Slickers since the 90's, so part of me wondered if I'd get anything out of them. Well, I guess I'll preface by saying at 36 City Slickers is definitely not my sort of film.  There are some funny bits that still work, but I can't relate to Mitch's moping around about his aging issues, and the comedy itself just doesn't work all the way through for me.

That being said director Ron Underwood keeps the film flowing at a solid pace so things are never quite boring, and once the plot gets going to Colorado/New Mexico the film starts to feel very much like a western at times. We even get a moment that feels like Leone could have shot at (Not spoiling even now as it's one of the legit actual funniest moments in the film). Other moments have dated the film, regarding technology. Of course, if there is one highlight here it's the performance of Jack Palance as Curly. Aside from that the cast is extremely solid performance wise, and with great chemistry throughout.

Audio/Video (4/5)

Shout Select presents City Slickers in a 1:85:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer that preserves the OAR of the film, detail, color reproduction, and black levels are solid.

Audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track that handles dialogue and score just fine.

Extras (3/5)

We get a quite interesting and entertaining commentary with director Ron Underwood with Daniel Stern, and Billy Crystal.  There is also a series of 4 featurettes, and deleted scenes.

Overall

City Slickers is a solid western/comedy hybrid that deals with themes of friendship and aging. As a kid I found this film hilarious. Now, it just didn't click, but it's still a solid film. The Blu-ray from Shout Select looks and sound great, with a number of interesting extras. RECOMMENDED.
