Right now I am playing Dragon Quest XI, and also running a D&D campaign. Why is this important? Because when I first saw the art and title of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, I became immediately interested in seeing the series, and how it plays out with the famed "slime" as a main character in a fantasy RPG styled world.
The series follows Satoru Mikami, a 37 year old Japanese salaryman, who lives a perfectly mundane and boring lifestyle. One day while walking in the street he is stabbed to death. He doesn't simply cease to exist, he finds himself reincarnated as a slime in a fantasy universe. His name is now Rimuru Tempest, and he is disappointed in the unremarkable nature of his current form. He will later find that he has the ability to merge with other creatures and assume their powers, when he does this with a dragon early in the series, he finds himself becoming an overpowered hero rather than a weak creature that he thought he was.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has a fantastic and bright RPG style world with wizards and dragons, and in that regard I had fun with it. The early episodes start out quite interesting, but once Rimuru finds out the extend of his abilities the show becomes a bit one sided. Nonetheless, it was a largely fun-affair and quite watchable with solid animation, and a decent story.
Funimation presents That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime on Blu-ray in a very solid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer. Everything here looks quite solid, colors pop, detail is excellent, and I could not find much in the way of issues. Extras include commentaries, promo videos, clean opening and closings and more. This is only part 1 of the series, but I am definitely looking forward to the rest. RECOMMENDED.
