The Film (5/5)

One cannot exactly fault Brad Bird for not jumping back into the Incredibles Universe directly after making the 2004 original film. Though it could be marked as an instant classic, and one of Pixar's finest films he chose to keep busy with such varied fare as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Tomorrowland, and quite possibly my favorite Pixar film of all Ratatouille.  When he finally came back to the franchise, one would be willing to assume it would have to be for something special, or at the very least good. Fans were treated to both, with a film that is certainly a worthy follow-up to the original.

Incredibles 2 essentially picks up in the moment the original left us. The Incredibles are taking on the "Underminder", however, this exposes them to the public as Supers and now the government can no longer offer protection to them.   As such, they are forced to go back to their lives alone until a rich individual Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk) comes into their lives. Winston is a great fan of theirs from years past, and does not believe in the criminalization of their activities, as such he hatches a plan to help bring them back from the fringe using Elastigirl as the face of new superhero activity, her particular activity being less destructive than her husbands.  At the same time, Bob is stuck at home being the domestic partner for the first time in their relationship. This brings complications he had never foreseen, or imagined.

Incredibles 2 is amazing. I'm not saying it's better than the original, at least not at this point, but at the very least it is the originals equal. Brad Bird and Pixar do the amazing work of making these characters and their world feel lived in, and their problems feel quite semi-real, and by that I mean their human emotions and problems, which then take the superhero activities and make them feel all the more potent. I personally have wanted a "good" Fantastic Four movie for decades, and aside from the cheap-y Roger Corman take on it, this is honestly the closest we have come to a real take on Fantastic Four.

The art and design work which is Pixar's forte is absolutely stunning, as such the animation is pitch perfect. Bird's stylistic choices throughout the film are excellent. Pacing is spot-on and there is not a single misplaced moment. The voice cast, both old and new, are excellent and bring a real life to their roles. I don't know what Pixar's plans are for this franchise going out, but I certainly hope, I don't have to wait 14 years for Incredibles 3.

Audio/Video (5/5)

Disney/Pixar presents Incredibles 2 with a splendid 1080p AVC encoded transfer that is well detailed, and excellent throughout, colors pop, and everything just looks tremendous.   Audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 7.1 track that just sounds great across the board with everything coming across crisp and clear.

Extras (3/5)

Disney has included deleted scenes, some short featurettes, some informative segments with Brad Bird about his career, and much more.

Overall

The Incredibles 2 is one of those rare sequels which comes out a significant amount of time after the original that is definitely worth the wait. The Blu-ray looks and sounds amazing, and has a nice extras slate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
