The Film (5/5)

I will admit that I am actually a pretty big fan of When Harry Met Sally. I saw this film when I was probably too young to understand it fully, and revisited it quite a few times through the years, and I keep expecting my tastes to have soured on a film which could be considered the first big hit by Nora Ephron, who would write films over the years that I could never get into such as Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. That being said there is something of a late 70's Woody Allen vibe here that I find quite appealing, as if Allen's style was brought into a more commercial vein successfully for this one film.

The film follows both Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan)  as they take a road trip to NYC to start their adult lives after graduation. After the road trip the pair separate, but fate keeps pulling them back together, even though they constantly try to refuse their cinematic destiny.

Performances are fantastic across the board, with obvious excellent turns by Crystal and Ryan, but also the rest of the cast such as The Burbs' Carrie Fisher, and Bruno Kirby.  The writing is excellent here, and the film flows nicely from one segment to the next, while building up the typical "will they?" suspense along the way.

Audio/Video (5/5)

Shout! Select gives the film a very solid 4k scan that produces fantastic results. Colors are nicely reproduced, detail is excellent,  and everything maintains a natural look to it.

Audio is handled by 2 audio tracks a DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 in English, both tracks are quite suitable for the material with dialogue and score coming through crisp and clear. Ambient effects come through slightly better on the 5.1.

Extras (5/5)

Although most of the material on this disc is standard definition, and ported from prior releases it features lots of featurettes, interviews, and 2 commentary tracks that feature director Rob Reiner. Shout! Select has included a new 45 minute featurette looking back on the film with Reiner and Crystal.

Overall

Quite a solid Blu-ray release of a romantic comedy classic. The Blu-ray looks and sounds wonderful, and is loaded with extras. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
