The Series (4/5)

    Akame Ga KILL! Collection 1 is a series I wasn't sure of when I first started watching it. The series starts following a protagonist named Tatsumi who comes to the city looking to make money, and send it back to his poor village. Unfortunately, his luck is terrible almost immediately. When things for him are about to get as bad as they can get, he is saved, by a group of assassins, one of whom contributed to his bad luck earlier in the episode. From then on he joins the team, and becomes a political assassin in an effort to get corruption out of their government.

    Akame Ga Kill was interesting. The first episode starts out sort of basic, but then takes a series of twist and turns that will certainly catch viewers off guard. It was a great start to a solid show, but the next few episodes seem sort of basic, showing the characters get involved in sort of assassinations-of-the-week. Sometime around episode 6 characters that viewers have become accustomed to start getting killed, and others come closer together. Yeah, it's a trick we see in shows a lot these days, but for this one it works, and though the show does continue on it's series of assassinations they get a bit more personal, the politics in the show come a bit more to the forefront, and the show begins to have an atmosphere akin to the Japanese samurai cinema of the 70's which also dealt with politics on some level.

Audio/Video (4/5)

    The animation throughout looks quite solid. Sentai presents the show in a series of 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer.  Colors look excellent, blacks are deep, and there is solid detail throughout.

    There is an English DTS-HD 5.1 track in English, and a Japanese DTS-HD MA 2.0 track. Both tracks are quite good with dialogue and score coming through nicely.

Extras (2/5)

    Sentai have provided the usual clean opening and closing animations. Something called AkaKill Theater which are 12 one minute shorts that connect to a single episode of the series. There are also trailers for other Sentai series.

Overall

    A fun, violent, and decently plotted assassin series Akame Ga KILL! is one of the better series I've watched recently. The Blu-ray looks and sounds quite good, and the extras are actually beyond the basic clean opening and closing (not much more, but it's there). RECOMMENDED.
