The Series (4/5)
Fans of the Evil Dead franchise basically begged Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and franchise star Bruce Campbell for a follow up to Army of Darkness for 2 decades after the release of that film to be frequently told essentially "one day" to "no way". Then one day about 6 years ago, our hopes were seemingly dashed when a remake was announced to the original film. The remake did well for Raimi and co., and sparked interest in the franchise again, but oddly not as a sequel to the remake. What we were given is not the Evil Dead 4/Army of Darkness 2 we have been asking for, but rather a TV series that follows the exploits of Ash Williams after the events of the Evil Dead films. The first season started off with a bang, and now with season 2 has gotten even better, now that it has found a comfortable groove.
The second season sees Ash in semi-retirement in Jacksonville, FL. Unfortunately for Ash that retirement is short lived as he finds himself besieged by deadites, and on his way back home to Elk Grove, MI. Upon arrival he finds the town infected with deadites, and it's up to him, Ruby Knowby (Lucy Lawless), and his 2 companions Kelly and Pablo to fight back against the deadite menace.
Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 2 is a breezy 10 episodes to get through, that is if you are able to stand the over the top gore that is the series bread and butter. This might just be the most consistently gory series ever to make it on TV, and considering it's splattery pedigree that is fantastic. Campbell fits back into his role as Ash as easily as putting a glove on, and is a great continuation of the Army of Darkness version of his character with 30 years of bitterness piled on. The remaining cast have excellent chemistry, and all work together quite well on screen. The writing is top notch, and will please both long times fans, and new comers to the franchise.
Audio/Video (4/5)
Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 2 is presented in a solid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer preserving the show's broadcast ratio. The show looks well detailed and has solid, but natural colors and deep blacks. There are some soft moments, but nothing too distracting.
Audio is presented in a 7.1 True HD track in English. Everything sound rip roaring and excellent. Dialogue, score, and ambient sound are clear. I did not detect any issues with the sound.
Extras (3.5/5)
There are loads of short documentaries, making-ofs, recaps, interviews, and commentaries sure to please fans of the show and the Evil Dead franchise.
Overall
Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 2 does a wonderful job continuing the story from the first series, and the franchise as a whole. The Blu-ray looks and sounds great, and has some interesting extras. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
