The Series (5/5)

The BBC Earth team could arguably be considered the finest group of nature documentarians on the globe besting National Geographic or any other potential competition. They have been making increasingly fine nature documentaries for decades, but with the 2001 release of Blue Planet and the 2006 Planet Earth they seemed to have left an undeniable landmark not just on U.K. viewers, but worldwide viewers who now eagerly anticipate each new documentary from the hardworking crew, and narrator David Attenborough.

Blue Planet II like its 2001 predecessor focuses on the world's oceans and waterways. Specifically the show spends time visiting the coast lines, coral reefs, the arctic, the deepest depths of the ocean (this one is my personal favorite), and much more.  This gives viewers a taste of the various oceanic environments that cover the vast majority of our planet. In doing so we get a view at a vast array of life that we would otherwise not get a chance to see. As per usual the visuals from the BBC Earth team are some of the most stunning to hit TV screens in a given year, and Attenborough's narration is as timeless as any of his others before this one.

Audio/Video (5/5)

Blue Planet II had a simultaneous release on Blu-ray and UHD and was shot in native 4k resolution. If you have a UHD player, I implore you to pick it up on that format. As I am not yet 4K capable, I had to pass on that option, but the Blu-ray presented in 1:78:1 in a 1080p AVC encoded transfer looked quite stunning in its own right with excellent detail throughout the presentation, inky deep blacks, and lush colors.

Audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track in English, and sounds excellent throughout the presentation.

Extras (2/5)

There is a 52 minute making of on the 4th disc of the set.

Overall

Blue Planet II is another splendid nature documentary from the BBC Earth team. The Blu-ray looks and sounds incredible, and has a limited, but solid extras slate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
