The Film (5/5)
Iron Monkey is a Robin Hood-esque hero in the city of Chekiang. He takes from the very rich and corrupt in order to help the poor. One day, young Wong Fei-hung (Tsang Sze-man) enters the town with his Father Kung Fu master Wong Kei-ying (Donnie Yen). Fei-hung is quickly taken from his Father by the evil government, and won't be returned unless he is able to retrieve Iron Monkey in 7 days. He agrees, but finds his task harder to handle, as the townsfolk reject him immediately as they love Iron Monkey for the good deeds he does. However Kei-ying is taken in by a Doctor, and his assistant Miss Orchid, who wish to know his reason for wanting to apprehend Iron Monkey. In the end things get more complicated when a monk enters the picture also wanting to capture Iron Monkey.
Iron Monkey is directed and produced by 2 legends Yuen Woo-Ping (Drunken Master) and Tsui Hark (Zu Warriors). The film is just across the board excellent. This is right around the period where HK Kung Fu was starting to wind down it's golden era, but this is just excellent all the way through. It has just enough drama and story in its Robin Hood type narrative to keep the viewer interested, elements of drama and suspense throughout, and some serious killer action and fight sequences.
