The Series (4/5)

The lovable UA High School gang returns in season 2 of My Hero Academia. After surviving the outbreak of villains at the tail end of Season 1, Midoriya and the gang are now on their guard. Ready for any attack and with a mission to improve their skills. Midoriya still hasn’t truly discovered all the powers of his quirk, but all this is about to change with the introduction of the Sports Festival. A tournament made to test new super heroes and see who can find a job the quickest. The stakes are high, and this will truly test their abilities. There also happens to be a hero killer on the loose.

Season 2 of My Hero Academia pushes the story forward into new and exciting stories. Like superhero movies, this acts as the part 2 story. The origin story is now out of the way and we can truly see where the characters will go.

Funimation has released the second season in two-part box sets. Each set holding four discs, two DVDs and two Blu-rays. Set one holding episodes 14 to 25 and set two holding episodes 26 to 38. The season moves at a break neck pace, with some arches being better then season 1. Midoriya gets to move on as a character and hold his own as the lead.

As for the action, the animation is gorgeous from all points of the frame. The Sports festival tops itself in every episode with new bold and wild creative choices, including a show stopping battle between Midoriya and Todoroki. The animation is fluid with waves of energy and trippy colors.

For fans of this series, Season 2 won’t disappoint. But for anime fans in general this a turning out to be a modern classic.

Audio/Video (5/5)

First up is the Japanese 2.0 Dolby TrueHD sound mix. The audio is crisp and sounds wonderfully on my sound system. There is no background hiss or noise. The sound effects themselves are truly wonderful. Next up is the 2.0 Japanese Stereo mix, which is slightly softer in overall tone. Then there are the two English dub tracks. First being the 5.1 Dolby True HD sound mix. And the other being the 5.1 Dolby digital one. Both tracks sound fine, I just prefer to stick to the original language whenever possible.  English Subtitles are included.

The 1080p HD transfer is also likewise very impressive. The black levels look wonderful and the focus is sharp. The color pop and Studio Bones has proven they can keep delivering the goods.

Extras (4/5)

Both sets are packed with extras. Including a Hero Notebook recap of Episode 13.5. Anime Expo 2017 coverage with an interview with Yoshihiko Umakoshi. Plus, inside the episode's featurettes, Promo videos, Textless opening and closing songs, trailers, and a San Diego Comic-Con IGN interview.

Overall (4/5)

My Hero Academia is continuing to be a stunning action drama, offering up some of the best in Japanese anime. Season 2 is full of chose moments to please all anime fans. Highly recommended.
