The Series (3/5)
Punch Line follows a young man named Yuta Iridatsu, who finds himself in the quite odd position of being spiritually removed from his own body on the cusp of the apocalypse. This ,of course, is an apocalypse that can only be averted with the assistance of Yuta, and a book that he possesses somewhere in the house that he dwells in with a group of beautiful women. This is both a blessing and a curse, as Yuta is given power by the sight of scantily clad women, but only to a certain point. If he gets too worked up then he passes out. Yuta basically needs to use his perversions for the positive to save the world before it's too late.
OK, so Punch Line starts off as mainly a fan service comedy anime with elements of the apocalyptic thrown in to add some seriousness to the situation. I'll admit during the first half I was entertained by the weirdness of combining panty shots and the end of the world. The concept, however, was thin and after a bit I found myself wearing out on it. Fortunately, the makers of the series (MAPPA) realized that as well, and decided to move the series into a more serious direction around the half way point. There is still fan service, and humor, but unlike the earlier parts of the series it is more in service to the plot. The show really does feel like it comes in 2 halves, but overall pacing is solid, and the show is at least entertaining through both sides. The animation is quite solid here. The show has some very interesting character designs, and conceptually some nice background design ideas.
Audio/Video (4/5)
Sentai Filmworks presents Punch Line: The Complete Collection in a splendid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer that preserves the original OAR of the program. The detail is quite nice in the animation, colors are reproduced well, and I didn't notice much in the way of banding.
Audio is presented with a simple DTS-HD MA 2.0 track in Japanese with subtitles. The track is serviceable, with dialogue and score coming through nicely.
Extras (1/5)
The Blu-ray comes with a clean opening and closing animation and trailers for other Sentai releases.
Overall
A solid blend of fan service and apocalyptic anime, Punch Line is a mixed bag, but mostly a fun watch. The Blu-ray looks quite solid, but is lacking in extra content. RECOMMENDED.
