The Film (2/5)
Larry (Larry Poindexter) has got some serious problems with his lady, Erica (Julie Strain). She quite literally has a spell on him. After she tries to kill her ex-lover Howard (Edward Albert) with some black magic, Larry has had enough. As he is trying to leave her, Larry accidentally throws Erica off a balcony. Now all kinds of strange coincidences and bad vibes start making his life even more complicated. Could the spirit of Erica really still be hanging around or could it be two other witchy women (Linda Blair and Toni Naples) putting the whammy on poor Larry?
Buried under all the silicone and long, boring softcore sex scenes is a fun little supernatural thriller with corny dialog and campy performances. The movie is divided into two storylines that barely come together (see what I did there?). One of them is led by Larry Poindexter and his sexy gang who are funny during their speaking scenes but are tedious as hell during their bonin’ scenes. The other story here -and the one that this entire movie should have been about- features Linda Blair, Edward Albert, Michael Parks, and William Marshall (Blacula!), who are all great in their respective roles.
Isn’t it always the way with these kinds of films? The one person you want to get naked never does! For me, that’s Linda Blair. She’s so cute in this and with all the other flesh flying around, I kinda hoped she’d get in the spirit of things. But this is 1995, not 1983. If only this was my biggest complaint with this film. Your tolerance for scripts riddled with clichés and soap opera mechanics will be tested here as well as your underused supernatural plot device fandom. Larry Poindexter is fun to watch but you won’t give a damn about the dorkus he’s portraying.
Audio/Video (4/5)
Sorceress looks and sounds really, really good in 1.85:1 and DTS-HD 2.0 audio. No complaints in those departments.
Extras (3/5)
This disc has two audio commentaries. The first is with director Wynorski alone and he gives a lot of info on the cast and crew involved in this production. Things get strange when he drops details about which actress was difficult to shoot because her breast augmentation surgery was still healing. He also gets very funny during the lesbian threesome, so you have that to look forward to. The other commentary is Wynorski again but this time, he’s hanging with Tom Savini, who had nothing to do with the film. They’re just drinking and watching the movie together. Its quality depends entirely on how many drinks you guzzle before starting it.
Overall
I wasn’t expecting much from Sorceress and I got even less than that. Everything could have been improved by a likeable main character and more witchy stuff. During the sex scenes, I just wanted to jump off a balcony myself just to get away from the movie. The fun rewards of bad fashion and awkward acting are just too few and far between to make this enjoyable. Wynorski has made much better films than this.
