The Film (3/5)

“Walking Tall” is a decent remake of the hugely underrated 1973 film. While this remake definitely pales in comparison, we are treated here with this version, from director Kevin Bray, as being what is called a “in and out” film.  With “Walking Tall” the second it starts, it feels like it is about to end. With a running time of just roughly seventy-three minutes, we are treated to some crazy over the top action action and a villain in the film, that is just way too poorly developed given the short running time. some over the top action, and the lack of a more direct villain weight this film down. However, Dwayne Johnson is solid in the lead and he provides plenty of his own experience to the intense action and fight sequences.

In the film, Johnson stars as a man disappointed with the violence in his town and ultimately decides to become a sheriff to stop the madness that is erupting.  The co-stars, are not really given much of a development and unfortunately are lacking in the film. “Walking Tall” is pretty much a long music video for Johnson, to show off his skills and for him to ultimately be cemented into what he is today, an action star.

The movie, has some great fight sequences that at least require the film to be viewed once and maybe even twice.  This is not Johnson’s finest hour, but it’s merely a mindless and somewhat entertaining action film that MGM was very proud of upon its initial release, due to Johnson slowly becoming a household name.”Walking Tall” has some fun humor, fantastic action and fight sequences and a very likable lead.

Audio/Video (5/5)

The video looks better than ever, given the MGM DVD was released over ten years ago. The audio feels and sounds fine, it is a DTS-HD mix that sounds just a bit cranky, but it is definitely not abysmal at all.

Extras (4/5)

Johnson steps in for a solo commentary, which honestly is worth buying for the disc alone. The second commentary brings together the crew and Kevin Bray, Glen Macpherson (Director of Photography) and Robert Ivison (Editor)

We are also treated to a very short featurette, a blooper reel, a deleted and alternate ending.

Overall

Walking Tall was not terrible, just short and rushed. Rent it.
