The Show (2.5/5)
This DVD from Cult Epics includes the first two episodes of The Claire Sinclair Show, an interview program hosted by Ms. Sinclair that airs on the Erotica Channel. Oddly enough, when I checked out the links provided on the back of the DVD for this online erotica network, I could find almost no evidence of its existence, aside from one brief clip on YouTube of Sinclair talking about Bettie Page. We’re going to have to take their word for it that the Erotica Channel is a thing, I guess.
In the first episode, Sinclair - the 2011 Playmate of the Year and star of the Las Vegas show Pin Up - interviews herself, reminding me of the similar interview David Byrne did to promote Stop Making Sense. Unfortunately, the gimmick isn’t as funny or interesting here. Sinclair is very likable and engaging, and I particularly appreciated an anecdote about her offering creative input on a Barbarella-esque comic book starring herself. But the concept goes nowhere, and I found my attention quickly straying.
The second episode is considerably more interesting, as Claire interviews legendary photographer Bunny Yeager, who is best known for shooting many of the most iconic Bettie Page pin-ups. This was Yeager’s last on-camera interview before her death in May 2014, and while it only really scratches the surface of her long career, the anecdotes she shares about designing Page’s costumes and overall look are interesting. Sinclair’s obvious affection for Yeager is quite endearing as well. The interview ends with footage from what is billed as Yeager’s last photo shoot - the highlights of Sinclair posing for Yeager are the only nudity to be found anywhere on the disc, but for her fans, that may be enough.
Audio/Video (3/5)
Both episodes are presented in the Academy ratio (1.33:1), and given how recent they are, they both unsurprisingly look good - brightness, color and contrast are strong throughout. The 2.0 is also solid, though the interview with Yeager sounds quite thin, though this is probably due to the sound quality in the gallery the interview was conducted in rather than any problems with the DVD itself.
Extras (2/5)
The disc includes Super 8 footage that essentially serves as B-roll footage from Sinclair’s photo shoot, as well as introductions by Sinclair for movies shown on the elusive Erotica Channel.
Overall:
The Claire Sinclair Show is bound to be unsatisfying for anyone looking for either porn or an engaging talk show about adult entertainment. I’d recommend it exclusively for big fans of Sinclair or for Bunny Yeager completists (I really hope that’s a thing that exists).
