Iron Man: Extremis - Review
I can't stress to everyone how much I like Marvel's new line of stop-motion comics. I pretty much sucked the Astonishing X-Men metaphorical penis citing how exciting it is to see one of my favorite stories faithfully translated to the small screen for my nerdgasms. It should come as no surprise that Warren Ellis's Iron Man: Extremis is just as good.
First of all, Warren Ellis writes good comics. Second of all, Adi Granov illustrates some pretty sexy pictures. Putting these two together on a project was a great idea. Thanks Marvel, I appreciate you. Since Iron Man: Extremis is more of the same animation as AX-M:G, I'm briefly state that I liked the animation. It was more of the same. Easy enough, right? It's good. Can we be done with that part now?
As far as the story goes, if you've read IM:E, you know exactly how it goes. But if you haven't, here's a very brief description: Somebody tries to recreate the super soldier serum, the original human enhancement formula most famous for giving us Captain America. They create something called Extremis. A domestic militant group injects one of their buddies with it. People die. More people die. Watch the flick for more on that.
What more should I say? Yeah, it's got some extras. A little chat with the artist. Some behind the scenes shit. A ridiculous video with MC Chris, Brian Bendis, Claudio Sanchez and a bunch of Mego figures. Oooh. And an exclusive music video. You know how much we love those.
If you're worried that the film is watered down, I assure you it isn't. It seemed incredibly faithful and somehow more bloody that the original. That's right: more blood. That's just how it seemed to me. I always thought that Iron Man fought nothing but the Mandarin and various evil(read: misunderstood) dudes in armor until I read this. Oh. And Jack Daniels as shown in a 9 issue arc from 1979 called Demon in a bottle written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton. You'll even notice some some very subtle references to his Alcoholism in Extremis. Fucking drunk. Clearly Ellis had other ideas, as he usually does. Seriously? Iron Man fighting super-powered terrorists? Take all of my money!
I know this is pretty short, but at least it's to the point.
You like Ellis? You'll like this.
You like Adi Granov? You'll like this.
You like Iron Man? You'll like this.
Seeing a pattern? These motion comics aren't very expensive either. Give them a chance. It costs less than the TPBs and it's just as good. And if you're not sure you'll like it, buy it for some nerd you know as a gift for Black History Month and borrow it. I like this enough to give it a 4.5/5. Hopefully you do too.
