The Series (4/5)

I am really impressed by the stuff that Section 23 is bringing out recently. This month (July 2015) has seen some simple and effective anime releases from the studio that have been a nice change of pace for myself as a viewer. One Week Friends tells the story of Yuki and Kaori. Yuki notices Kaori at school as she is typically alone, and he wants to know why. After a bit of prodding it is revealed that she has no friends, because her less important memories reset once a week on Sunday Night, and part of this is this is the memories of her friends. She begins every Monday morning without the knowledge of her friends, and any activities they have done together.

Yuki becomes determined to not only be Kaori's friend, but maintain in her permanent memory to achieve this he encourages Kaori to keep a journal of their time together, that way on Monday morning she can read it, and begin to emotionally understand what she felt previously toward, as the journal continues their connection grows, that is until spring turns to summer, and school goes on break, which causes difficulties due to the separation of the two friends.

The show sets up it's premise nicely, and establishes its characters quite well.  The show is paced in a way that some viewers might find slow, but honestly gives the viewer time to really get into the world of the series, and the situation the characters find themselves in before adding drama to it.  This gives the series a bit more power in the end as we really feel for these individuals as events begin to transpire that effect them.

Audio/Video (4/5)

Sentai Filmworks gives the series quite a nice 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer that looks quite solid. Detail is excellent, colors, are stable, and I could fine really nothing to complain about for the most part. The audio is presented with a DTS-HD MA 2.0 track in Japanese which is quite suitable for the material with dialogue and score coming through nicely.

Extras (1.5/5)

A little bit better than the typical Sentai opening and closing animations (although those are present as well. We also get promotional spots for the series.

Overall

One Week Friend was a nice surprise. It offers an interesting premise with interesting characters, and subtle, but quite nice animation. The Blu-ray looks and sounds nice, but again the extras are limited. RECOMMENDED.
