The Series (4/5)

    The first 4 Seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation were uneven at times, but built up to become one of the truly great science fictions shows of all time. Season 5 of the show, however, seemed to lose direction a bit, and while it had a number of fine episodes, it was the most uneven season since the show's first. The first, of course, was understandable, as it was still trying to find its identity as both an singular entity, and as part of the greater Star Trek universe.

    Season 6 was the first season produced of Next Generation following the 1991 death of Gene Rodenberry, and his passing seems to have had an impact on the shows creative staff. The show appears to get back on all cylinders, and produce not only a great season, but one of the finest seasons of Next Generation. It also takes a much darker turn that the series has yet to see until this point.  Of course, there was a always hints of darkness in the show, but Rodenberry's vision was of a future utopia, and it appears that with his death that veil has been lifted ever so slightly (it would get further dark in both Deep Space 9 and Voyager), and we are treated to much darker episodes of Star Trek than have ever existed previously.

     Also, the cast and crew of the show have been working together so long together by this point that there chemistry is more along the lines of a family unit than a group of actors working together.  So we have very natural, yet powerful performances from the returning crew members of the Enterprise.  There are some fun and exciting episodes that rank amongst the series best including The Chase, Birthright, Chain of Command, Frame of Mind, Starship Mine, and more. Also, a certain member of the original Enterprise crew returns in Relics, and that's always a bit of fun.

Audio/Video (4.5/5)

      In keeping with the tradition set forth by the prior 5 Seasons of Star Trek: TNG the sixth season of the show comes to Blu-ray with beautifully restored 1080p AVC encoded transfer in the shows native 1:33:1 aspect ratio. The colors look excellent, black levels are deep, and flesh tones are accurate.  The detail present in the transfer is excellent, and aside from 90's TV softness, there is nothing to complain about here.

    The audio is presented in an English DTS-HD 7.1 track, everything here sounds excellent with dialogue, effects, and score coming through nicely, and no issues present that I could detect on any of my viewings.

Extras (4/5)

    Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 is filled to the brim with extras some are archival ports of DVD extras, and some are newly created for this set. However,  you will get cast and crew profiles, discussions about plot lines, documentaries, commentaries, and more. This set is packed and worth every cent.

Overall

    Quite likely the best season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic, and the extras are truly over the top. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
