The Series (4/5)

    Psychic Squad began life as a manga series about 3 young girls with psychic powers.  It was created by Takashi Shiina and was first published in 2005.  3 years later in 2008 the series would begin a run that would encompass 51 episodes. The series did quite well, and in the same year it debuted even received a Nintendo DS video game spin-off in the series native Japan.

     Psychic Squad, the original series focused on elementary age protagonist, and while it certainly felt like an action series was more light-hearted and comedic in tone. Unlimited Psychic Squad, by direct contrast focuses on the villain of the original series Hyobu Kyosuke, and his secret organization P.A.N.D.R.A.  The series follows the villain who proves to have a kind-heart under his dark exterior, as he goes about trying to save ESPers (people with psychic abilities) like himself from humans who are imprisoning and mistreating them, and having them join him in P.A.N.D.R.A.

    The series sort of feels like a Japanese X-Men if Magneto took the place of Professor X, and was played as more of an anti-hero that an absolute villain. The series due to coming from the villains perspective does cast the show in a much darker light than the original Psychic Squad anime, of course, this fits the spinoff quite well, and makes it stand out from it's source.   The animation is more of the modern computer animated style, very stylized, it does for the most part work here. 

    Unlimited Psychic Squad is positively loaded with action.  This is a series that takes it's action component seriously, and each episode is loaded with excellent action sequences. The series runs a total of 12 episodes, and hits the ground running, I watched the whole thing in a few nights, and that is not something I normally do.

Audio/Video (4/5)

     Sentai Filmworks presents Unlimited Psychic Squad with a splendid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer that preserves the shows original aspect ratio. The show is much darker than the predecessor, and that is reproduced nicely here, excellent colors, solid blacks, and outstanding detail.

    The audio is presented with a DTS-HD MA 2.0 track in Japanese that is quite good, dialogue comes through nicely, as does the shows score/soundtrack, and other sounds. I did not detect any issues such as pops, cracks, or hissing on the track.

Overall

Unlimited Psychic Squad is a dark, action packed anime experience. The Blu-ray looks and sounds quite excellent. Extras are limited, but as usual that is expected. RECOMMENDED.
